Privacy policy

terminal-life ("this site") is a static library of command-line tutorials. There are no accounts, no comments, no newsletter, and no forms. This page explains what information is collected when you visit, who collects it, and the choices you have.

Summary

  • This site has no analytics package and doesn't build visitor profiles.
  • The web server keeps an ordinary access log for running and protecting the site.
  • Ads are served by Google AdSense. Google and other third-party vendors may use cookies to show ads, including ads based on your previous visits. You can opt out of personalized advertising (links below).

Information the site's server records

Like nearly every web server, the server that hosts terminal-life writes an access log line for each request: your IP address, the date and time, the request method and the page or file requested, the response status and size, the referring page (if your browser sends one), and your browser's user-agent string. A separate error log records problems, such as a missing page, and can include your IP address and the address you requested.

These logs are used only to keep the site running and secure (for example, to diagnose errors or block abusive traffic). Logs are rotated daily and kept for about 14 days, then deleted automatically. They stay on the server, aren't sent to any other service, and aren't sold or shared. The only exceptions are the third-party cloud infrastructure provider in the US that hosts the server, and cases where the law requires it. There's no content delivery network or other intermediary in front of the site.

Analytics

This site doesn't use Google Analytics or any other analytics or tracking service. If one is ever added, this section will name it and link to its privacy policy before it goes live.

Cookies set by this site

terminal-life itself doesn't set cookies and doesn't store anything in your browser. The only script the site serves is a small one that powers the "COPY" buttons on code blocks, and it stores nothing. The site also tells browsers not to use their interest-based "Topics" feature on its pages.

Advertising: Google AdSense

This site uses Google AdSense to show ads. Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to serve and measure these ads.

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website or other websites.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to users based on their visit to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
  • You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google's Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalized advertising at www.aboutads.info (the Digital Advertising Alliance's YourAdChoices program). If you're in the EU or UK, www.youronlinechoices.eu offers a similar tool.

Ads on this site may also be served by other third-party vendors and ad networks through Google's systems. These vendors may use cookies to serve ads based on your visits. You can see and control many of them at www.aboutads.info and, for users in Europe, www.youronlinechoices.eu.

To learn more about how Google uses data:

Blocking third-party cookies in your browser won't stop the site from working. You may still see ads, but they will be less personalized.

Visitors in the EEA, the UK, and Switzerland

If you're visiting from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, this site doesn't ask for consent to personalized advertising, so Google serves you only non-personalized or limited ads. Those ads aren't based on your past browsing, though Google may still use cookies or similar technologies for things like frequency capping, aggregated ad reporting, and fraud prevention. You can still manage your choices in Google's Ads Settings and at www.youronlinechoices.eu.

Email

If you email the site, your address and message are used only to reply and, if you report an error, to fix the page. They aren't added to any list or shared.

Children

This site is meant for a general technical audience. It isn't directed at children under 13 and doesn't knowingly collect information from them.

Pages link to tool documentation and other websites. Those sites have their own privacy policies, and this site isn't responsible for them.

Your choices and rights

  • Opt out of personalized ads: Google Ads Settings and www.aboutads.info.
  • Block or delete cookies in your browser settings.
  • Depending on where you live (for example, under the GDPR or US state privacy laws), you may have the right to ask what data is held about you and to have it deleted. Because the site only keeps short-lived server logs, there is usually nothing tied to you personally. To ask anyway, email the address below.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with an updated date at the top.
